HLP 3 - Collaborate with families to support student learning & secure needed services

High Leverage Practice 3 is a collaboration strategy that includes special education teachers working alongside with families to support students with disabilities. HLP 3 is part of the High LEverage PRactices in Special Education publication by the council for exceptional children (CEC) and the collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability & Reform (CEEDAR) Center. The CEC & CEEDAR center have also developed the HLP Highlight Tools to aide educators learn how to incorporate HLP's into their instruction.

Takeaways & Steps:

Collaborating throughout HLP 3 includes discussing the student's needs, goals, programs, and any progress that the student is making with the student's family. Securing and ensuring that each student's family is aware of the services that their child may need is also extremely important in order to access those services. From there it is imperative to keep an honest and open communication portal. Communicating respectfully with any family members while taking into account their language, culture, background, economic status, and their priorities is important. Next, advocate for any resources to help the student reach their goal and their potential. Finally, always encourage self advocacy. By encouraging the student and the support of their families to advocate for themselves, self determination skills are developed.
