High leverage practice 1 involves collaboration strategies that work together with other school professionals in order to support students' success. Collaboration should be used to support students' learning habits as well as their emotional well being. HLP 3 - Collaborate with families to support student learning & secure needed services

High Leverage Practice 3 is a collaboration strategy that includes special education teachers working alongside with families to support students with disabilities. HLP 3 is part of the High LEverage PRactices in Special Education publication by the council for exceptional children (CEC) and the collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability & Reform (CEEDAR) Center. The CEC & CEEDAR center have also developed the HLP Highlight Tools to aide educators learn how to incorporate HLP's into their instruction.  Takeaways & Steps:  Collaborating throughout HLP 3 includes discussing the student's needs, goals, programs, and any progress that the student is making with the student's family. Securing and ensuring that each student's family is aware of the services that their child may need is also extremely important in order to access those services. HLP 2 is a high leverage practice in Special education that signals the important skills of a teacher to effectively lead and structure meetings with parents and guardians talk about a student's educational needs, plans and their progress, This high leverage practice ensures open communication along with smart decision making opportunities. When families are actively involved in their child's education, it leads to better academic and behavioral progress. Important elements of HLP 2: Active listening : It is important to be mindful of any family concerns and to pay very close attention to what families may need help with. It is important to stay engaged by using both verbal and nonverbal cues.
